Rainy/Snowy Day Favorites

Living in Colorado, one comes to expect at least one spring storm that makes you curse putting the shovel in the basement and makes you cry for the poor plants and trees that have started to bloom. It is so tempting to just want to let your little ones watch TV all day when it rains or snow. But, there are simple things you can do to pass the time besides putting Daniel Tiger on repeat. Here are some of my favorites to do with Emma.
- Re-enact a scene from a favorite movie, book or TV show. Collect props, costumes etc from around the house and use them to make the scene more authentic.
- Play Games- Games normally played outdoors can be modified for indoor fun. Play hide and seek, freeze tag or Simon Says while you stay warm and dry inside.
- Build a fort/castle/campsite – pillows, blankets, chairs, a side table…. No doubt you have all you need to build King Arthur’s home. Have an indoor picnic to go along with the fun.
- Have an indoor scavenger hunt/ stage a mystery- It can be simple or complex. You may even find some things you have lost along the way.
- Gather a bunch of random craft items and recyclables and see what you can create with them.
- Turn an old box into anything from a car to a rocket ship.
- Brighten someones day by making them a card. A sick friend, a neighbor who lost a pet- there are probably a few people that would enjoy a homemade card.
- Have an indoor pillow or snowball fight. Socks make a good substitute for snowballs.
- Bake anything from cookies to homemade Playdoh. Cooking is a great way to teach children how to follow directions, safety in the kitchen and is good one on one time. You probably already have everything you need to make Playdoh in less than ten minutes without a trip to the store.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup water
- 2 teaspoons Cream of Tarter
- 1/3 cup salt
- 1 tablespoon Vegetable or Canola Oil
- Food coloring
In a 2 quart saucepan, add flour, 2 teaspoons of Cream of Tarter and salt. The salt is necessary to keep the Playdoh from being too sticky! Add water and vegetable oil slowly Stir after you turn burner to medium/low. Keep stirring until the mixture is smooth (a few bumps is a-OK). Add food coloring and continue to stir until it becomes thick and sets on spoon. Let cool on a cookie sheet or plate. Repeat process for additional colors. Store in Ziploc bag. Add a little water to dough if it begins to harden.
- When there is a break in the clouds, bundle up and head outside. If it’s snow on the ground, hit the sledding hill or make a snowman. After the rain, go for a puddle jumping walk. It’s one of Emma’s favorite things to do.
